Where Ability Shines Beyond Disability

The Warembo Na Disability (WND) is a society registered under the Societies Act in Kenya. The WND is a diverse an independent and non-governmental society aimed to promote and advocate for the social and economic rights of Women Living With Disability in Kenya. The Society is currently based in Kenya’s capital city in Nairobi.

The name Warembo Na Disability is unique and very impactful it was coined from the term beautiful. Warembo Na Disability Society promotes and recognizes the beauty and potential of women living with disability. The establishment of WND was informed by some of the personal experiences of some of the Members and in recognizing that women and girls with disabilities are often at greater risk, both within and outside the home, of violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation. This has been buttressed in the International Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities. The society currently has 20 members including its officials.

To promote access to quality education for women with disabilities, develop talent and skills, create awareness and capacity building for women PWDs) and PWDs Societies (PWDSs) at the grassroots level in and provide economic empowerment solutions.

Establishment

Legal Framework

Warembo Na Disability has been established and registered under the Societies Act, Cap 108, Kenya. Its tenants are founded on the spirit of the Constitution of Kenya which recognizes the rights of all persons and provides protection from discrimination directly or indirectly on any ground, including race, sex, pregnancy, marital status, health status, ethnic or social origin, colour, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, dress, language or birth.

The WND principles are also founded on the International Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities which recognizes “the valued existing and potential contributions made by persons with disabilities to the overall well-being and diversity of their communities, and that the promotion of the full enjoyment by persons with disabilities of their human rights and fundamental freedoms and of full participation by persons with disabilities will result in their enhanced sense of belonging and in significant advances in the human, social and economic development of society and the eradication of poverty.”
